Live Updates: Iran’s supreme leader warns U.S., Israel against new attacks

What to know about the Iran war today:
Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the U.S. and Israel on Saturday against restarting the war amid weeks of heightened tensions and threats on both sides. He said there would be no geographical limitations for Iranian attacks if the war resumes.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday no decision has been made yet on whether to restart military action against Iran, but “if we needed to do something militarily, we would have the ability to do it and we have everything we need to be successful.”

President Trump said Friday the war with Iran is “going to end soon,” without specifying how, as Qatari mediators returned to Tehran to push for a peace deal being haggled over by Iran and the U.S.

No changes to nuclear doctrine, but new attacks could necessitate change, Iranian official says
The powerful leader of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who Vice President JD Vance engaged with a peace proposal last weekend, said on Saturday the country has not made any changes to its nuclear doctrine — but renewed strike might change that.

“No new decision has been made regarding changes to the nuclear doctrine,” Secretary Mohsen Rezaei told official news outlet IRNA. “Of course, the discussion is raised that if war breaks out again, do we want to have the previous doctrine or not, but no new official and governmental decision has been made yet.”

Iran has said many times the country was never attempting to enrich uranium to weapons grade, a claim largely disputed by the U.S. and Israel. President Trump has repeatedly made it known the main objective of the war in Iran is to prevent the country from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Iran’s nuclear sites have been hit repeatedly, both last summer in U.S. and Israeli strikes and in the renewed fighting this year, and it’s unclear what capabilities remain.

Rezaei also told IRNA he has not yet responded to Vance’s letter outlining some of the U.S. positions for peace talks.

Iran claims oil tanker hit mine, on fire east of the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has claimed another ship transiting the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz hit a mine and is on fire, according to semi-official Fars News Agency.

“This afternoon, a violating oil tanker that, disregarding warnings, was transiting in the prohibited and unsafe area in the east of the Strait of Hormuz, caught fire after striking sea mines,” the country’s navy said, according to Fars News Agency.

The news could not immediately be verified.

Iran has claimed nearly 10 ships have hit mines while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, specifically along the Omani coastline. That shipping lane is favored by the U.S. and is considered prohibited by Iran. Of the 81 attacks on ships in the strait since July 6, 59 of them have been on the southern route, according to the U.K. Marine Trade Operations Centre.

U.S. yet to decide whether it will restart strikes on Iran, Rubio says
President Trump has not made a decision about new strikes on Iran amid stalled peace talks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday.

“We can achieve military objectives if we seek to. He hasn’t made a decision. I have no announcement in that regard with you today, and nor do we take any of it lightly,” Rubio said at a G20 press conference in Atlanta.

“If we needed to do something militarily, we would have the ability to do it and we have everything we need to be successful,” Rubio added. “But we would prefer to do it peacefully.”

He also would not characterize whether progress has been made in the last few days and said there is no timeframe on talks between the U.S. and Iran through its mediators.

Rubio continued to echo many of the things Mr. Trump has said in recent weeks and months. The United States’ main objective is to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and Rubio emphasized the threat to the rest of the world if they do.

“The Iranian regime is basically arguing is, ‘Unless we get what we want, not only will we blow up ships, but we will destroy the energy infrastructure of our neighbors and the entire region.’ Just think about that,” Rubio said. “Because I think that we skip over that like that’s some sort of normal behavior. That’s not normal behavior, but we are there to help protect against it.”
